Before your appointment

Hair Consultation: What to Bring and What to Ask

Bring a few inspiration photos, an honest account of your hair history and a sense of the time you want to spend styling it. You do not need to know the name of the perfect service. Your consultation is the place to work that out together.

At Linea of the Yarra Valley in Lilydale, we allow 15 to 30 minutes for an in-depth consultation. We discuss your goals and look at your scalp and hair to help shape a personalised haircare plan. Here is how to make that conversation useful.

A conversation about your hair, your preferences and your routine is the starting point. Meet Linea.

Choose photos for the details you like

Rather than finding one “perfect” photograph, bring a few that show what appeals to you. Point out the length, fringe, colour tone or movement you like in each. A picture you do not like can be just as helpful if you can explain why.

Your own photographs can help too. Show your stylist a time when your hair felt easy to manage, or a previous colour you would rather avoid. The aim is a shared picture of the result you want, rather than a promise to reproduce someone else’s hair.

Tell us what your hair has been through

Let your stylist know about previous colour, lightening, home colouring and other treatments. If you cannot remember the product or date, say so; you are not expected to arrive with a technical record.

Talk through how you wash, dry and style your hair now, including the products and tools you use. Mention what is working and what frustrates you. That helps make the conversation about your actual hair, rather than the photograph alone.

Make room for everyday life in the plan

If you prefer to air-dry, say so. If you enjoy styling each morning, explain what you are comfortable doing. Talk about how often you would like to return to the salon, as well as the time you can give your hair between visits.

A major colour change or a different shape is easier to discuss when your stylist understands those priorities. Ask which parts of the look need ongoing salon appointments and which rely on styling at home.

Ask the questions that help you decide

Your questionWhat to clarify
What is realistic from my starting point?Which parts of your goal can be planned now, and whether more than one visit may be needed.
Which appointment should I book? The proposed service, appointment time and quote before you commit.
How will I look after it?The styling, home care and return visits involved in the look you choose.

Not sure which service to choose? Tell the team what you would like to change, and ask where to begin.

Leave with a clear next step

Before you finish, check that you understand what to book, any preparation your stylist has requested and the home-care advice discussed. Keep your reference photos and notes so you can return to the same priorities at your appointment.

You can explore Linea’s colouring and cuts and styles services beforehand. If you are unsure which appointment fits, contact the salon about a consultation and describe your goal.
